England’s Portsmouth City has welcomed funding for 34 new electric buses as a significant milestone. The Portsmouth City Council said the scheme would transform local bus services and help achieve its pledge of becoming net carbon zero. The British government awarded the city £6.5m for the vehicles which will serve routes across Portsmouth, Gosport, and Fareham.
The money is part of a £200m National Bus Service Improvement Plan to make public transport more sustainable. The Local Democracy Reporting Service says the funding will also cover new charging and fuelling infrastructure.
