Ultracapacitors: Advanced Energy Storage for Electrified Vehicles
Ultracapacitors store energy and power various types of vehicles. Unlike lithium batteries, they are better suited for heavy-duty applications due to their recognized robustness, safety, long service life, and resistance to temperature fluctuations.
Aowei’s ultracapacitors are a high-performance energy storage solution, offering high power density, near-instant charging and discharging, high reliability, extreme temperature tolerance, and a lifespan of over 1,000,000 charge-discharge cycles.
Aowei’s series of high-energy organic hybrid ultracapacitors represents a cutting-edge technology that allows modern trams to operate without overhead supply cables. This reduces infrastructure costs and provides a more economically viable solution for public transport operators.
Ultracapacitor projects with trams
There are three types of tram operation modes with UC offered to the operators:
1. Full-line Catenary-free
0~100% State-Of-Charge method for fully charged of ultracapacitor from 3 to 4 minutes.
Ultracapacitor lifespan is 1 million cycles/ 10 calendar years.
2. Partial line catenary-free
Charging method is onboarding high power DC/DC charging.
Ultracapacitor lifespan is 1 million cycles/ 10 calendar years.
3. Cross-section catenary-free
Charging method is onboarding high power DC/DC charging.
Ultracapacitor lifespan is 1 million cycles/ 10 calendar years.
The main key benefits of UC technology for trams are:
- Reduce huge investment in infrastructure – catenary and lines.
- Able to work with smaller grid capacity (compared to catenary trams), as increasing grid capacity is a significant cost.
- To provide flexibility and higher availability for tram operation.
- To reduce visual impact in city centers by catenary removal.
