Bulgaria is holding negotiations with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to finance a project for replacing the buses used in the country’s urban transport with electric buses. This was announced by Finance Minister Asen Vasilev, who attended the Bank’s Bulgarian annual results presentation, as reported by the Bulgarian National Television (BNT).
According to him, if the current traditional vehicles are replaced with electric ones, this would result in reducing several times their maintenance costs. This project financing could be conducted via the creation of a fund, which municipalities would be able to benefit from, under certain conditions.
In 2023, the EIB group, which includes the European Investment Bank and the European Investment Fund, has lent 1.1 billion euros for projects in Bulgaria. This is more than double compared to a year earlier. It is expected that the granted loans will generate over 5.4 billion euros of investments in Bulgaria. This money helped subsidize more than 8,000 small and medium enterprises.
