A unique pre-commercial electric road technology proving project, Smartroad Gotland, will build knowledge for future electric roads. Electric roads will charge electric vehicles wirelessly as they travel along them.
Backed and funded by the Swedish Transport Administration, Smartroad Gotland is led by ElectReon AB, Swedish subsidiary of Israel’s ElectReon Wireless. The project features a Chariot ultracapacitor e-bus equipped to tap a subsurface grid. It will be Europe’s first e-bus to test and use this innovative charging method. The infrastructure includes subsurface rubber-covered copper coils, roadside management units sending grid power to the coils, and bus underside receivers sending power to the ultracapacitor. This world-leading technology promises to cut fossil fuel burns dramatically while cutting urban air and noise pollution.
A mile/1.6km of electric road was installed on a 4.1km road stretch between the town of Visby and its airport. Chariot e-buses and heavy-duty e-trucks will ply the road, charging wirelessely and demonstrating the ElectReon innovation.
